They never faded into obscurity, but they certainly weren’t being talked about as much as their 90s alt rock counterparts.

But those two coupled with the critical thrashing they received really did a number on STP. They could have survived the long period of inactivity (Alice in Chains and Soundgarden went longer without new material) and fan disappointment with later albums didn’t have to mean their earlier work would be tarnished (people still love Siamese Dream despite the cold reception much of The Smashing Pumpkin’s work gets nowadays). At some point fan opinion turned and people started to agree that they were a budget Pearl Jam. They were certainly never unpopular, but by their fourth album they no longer dominated the airwaves.įor a long time, there was a stigma attached with liking Stone Temple Pilots. By the time the critics started to like their work, they were starting to lose fans. Rolling Stone named them the worst new band of 1992 while a reader’s poll named them the best. Their status as Pearl Jam wannabes (entirely unfair, much of the material found on Core predates Pearl Jam’s formation) led the critics to attack them. People were clamouring for more of the same, but of course the critics needed a band to attack for the “commercialisation” of alternative rock, and Stone Temple Pilots were just the band for the job. Bands like The Smashing Pumpkins and Blind Melon were proving that alternative rock had staying power beyond a couple of big bands. When Core was released in 1992, Nirvana had taken the world by storm and Pearl Jam had released the biggest debut album since Appetite for Destruction, arguably the biggest of all time. Stone Temple Pilots came at the exact right time to be huge, and the exact right time to receive a lot of critical backlash. It’s understandable why the members of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver both gave up on him, and it’s understandable why a lot of people were less than shocked at the news of his death yesterday.īut it’s more than the addiction that left Weiland disrespected.
CONVERSATION KILLS STONE TEMPLE PILOTS LYRICS PROFESSIONAL
Heroin addiction coupled with bipolar disorder doesn’t exactly make the most professional frontman. It’s fair to say Weiland was difficult to work with. There’s a lot of reasons for this and I suppose I should start with the obvious. But despite their success, I don’t think they were respected acts, and I don’t think Weiland was a respected frontman. Core was certified 8x platinum, and Slither has become a classic rock staple despite being just over a decade old. Of course he was popular, Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver were both hugely successful bands. Scott Weiland never really got the respect I think he deserved.
